Overwhelmed? Take a time out!
I recently picked up a copy of the September O Magazine (Oprah Winfrey) and was shocked, amazed, and frankly excited to see her “What I know for sure” article. Within it she addresses the concept of being overwhelmed. It was, as often is the case in my life – perfect timing.
Recently my business has exploded to a new level and I found myself, unconsciously, slipping into some of my old patters. The ‘busyness’ of life was all around me. At night, when I went to bed, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the things that I hadn’t gotten to that day and by the time I awoke in the morning I had another 20 emails added to the pile. I was, needless to say, overwhelmed.
And then, like a god-send, there was the article written by Oprah herself. Oprah – overwhelmed? It’s true.
After reading the article I knew exactly what I needed to do – take a time out. As is so often the case in life, when things are the busiest, it is the most important time to take a step back. Get out of the rat race for a moment and become a birds eye observer in your life. For me, I went to the place where I find the greatest solitude and where I can immediately escape my chattering mind and get grounded back in my body – the beach. Once grounded I was able to objectively go through the tasks, the ‘to do’s’ and assess which ones were really moving me in the direction of my goals and dreams and which ones were just ‘noise’ and an old pattern that says to be a success you have to be a complete mess! It’s a lie!
When you are grounded it is so much easier to get clear on what really needs to be done, what can be delegated and what is just simply unnecessary noise in your egoic mind keeping you in a state of dissatisfaction. Thank you Oprah for the inspirational article!
If you are overwhelmed in any area of your life – take a break, get grounded and things will appear much differently.

Women In Business
I has such a mixed reaction last night when I tuned in to watch my good friend and colleague Christopher Flett on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. Chris was on the show to discuss his book What Men Don’t Tell Women About Business. Because I know Chris personally I’ve been privy to discussions with him around his intention behind writing the book. Believing strongly that ‘knowledge is power’ Chris felt compelled to share with otherwise ignorant women what really goes on in business behind the closed doors when alpha males gather. By giving away the ‘secrets’ of the alpha male Chris gives women the hand up and enables them to reach the levels of success in business which have been dominated by men. Chris is passionate about partnering with women who understand the fundamentals of business and is promoting the synergy that exists when the two genders work together. I admire and support Chris for his courage in exposing the information and bringing all parties to the same playing field.
The show was set up as a panel discussion and accompanying Chris was Mel Robins and Kandi Haupt. What most upset me about the show was the animosity and anger that both these women were giving off. Mel’s comment was that this conversation about ‘alpha males’ was archaic and irrelevant in this day and age. Well, as women in business I’d like to call her bluff. I continually encounter alpha males on a daily basis and knowing their drivers, and how to best do business with them has increased my success 10 fold. I agree that demographics are changing and that the ‘old alpha’ persona is beginning what will be a very slow death, however, in this case ignorance is not bliss! Kandi, on the other hand was even more disturbing as she bragged about being a ‘bitch’ and a ‘maniac on a mission’, both of which are female versions of the alpha male. Both women put me off as they exuded anger, which comes from fear, rather than poise and control that comes from confidence.
There is no argument that Chris’s message is contentious and aggressive, even he will admit that. But I think what these two women missed was his intention. Both of them brought up the word results a number of times – kudos!!! Business is all about results and if positive results is the end in mind, how does arguing and fighting get us there? Both Mel and Kandi could have benefited women in business by LISTENING rather than trying to talk over one another and Chris.
One thing I’ve learned in life is that you can learn from anyone at any time. The universal law of polarity teaches us that if we can find something wrong, it’s a good sign, because by law there must also be something right. I would have loved to see each panelist share their take, listen openly to the other’s and leave the show with a new perspective on how to achieve successful RESULTS in business.
Instead, the women displayed an all too familiar female stereotype and let our gender down once again.

A Woman With a Vision
Recently I met the most amazing woman. Her name is Shauna Magrath and she has been a make-up artist working in the film industry for the last 15 years. When I first met her she was so excited because she was venturing out and pursuing a new business. She traveled to Ontario to be trained in the application of Permanent Make-Up and Corrective Cosmetics.
She started telling me about her vision and passion and it was so inspiring. There is a variety of procedures that she is now trained to perform including, but not limited to: permanent eyeliner, eyebrows, lip liner and lip colour.
What struck me the most in my conversation with Shauna was her passion to work with women in an effort for them to realize and recognize their beauty and value as people. Though some women would be having these procedures done strictly for cosmetic reasons, there are others who have been scarred for a variety of reasons, and Shauna can help restore their skin and subsequently their self-confidence.

YWIB – A Breath of Fresh Air
I was recently an exhibitor at the Beyond Pink Conference that was put on by the newly formed Young Women In Business Society.
YWIB is a network for emerging professional women in Western Canada and all I can say is wow! The girls that have put this organization together are so incredibly amazing. They have a definite purpose, a niche market and a vision for the future – truly inspiring!
I was recently interviewed by Chris Flett for his Ghost CEO blog and one of the questions he posed was “What has been your major struggle as a female professional?” My response was that being young had been one of the biggest struggles that I have had to overcome in business. There is still an old paradigm out there that says you have to “pay your dues” in business and climb the proverbial ladder in order to reach the top.
What I love about YWIB is that they are blazing a trail for change. They are young, enthusiastic, intelligent women who are being creative and supportive of one another as they grow and develop in their professional lives. Too often I’ve seen women get caught in the competitive mindset where they are so busy trying to keep on top of what everyone else is doing so as not to be “one up’d” that they forget about themselves. YWIB is encouraging the new creative model. What is it about you that is unique and special? What unique gifts and talents do you bring to the table? What experiences have you had that you can share with others in order to bring perspective to someone else’s life?
It is so exciting to see that the new generation of female professionals are already getting it. It’s about supporting one another, encouraging one another and allowing one another to grow and develop.
It doesn’t seem that being young is holding any of these aspiring women back from making all their goals and dreams a reality.
Hats off!!!
HLM Fitness
So for those of you who wonder how I keep my body looking so good? Well, I’ve finally decided to share.
Her name: Hayley McGowan!
Hayley and I first became fast friends during our early years as we shared a common interest in the sport of swimming. Competing at a high level we had daily practices (often twice a day) and therefore spent a lot of time together, training, laughing and of course – winning! The difference between us, Hayley kept going.
In 2006 Hayley completed her first Ironman competition with a time of just over 12 hours. No, that was not a misprint, she spent 12 consecutive hours killing herself in a grueling competition of too long of a swim, a disgustingly long bike ride and closed with a marathon – yikes! Hayley is more dedicated to health, wellness and fitness that nearly anyone else I know. She prides herself on “walking the talk” and whenever I feel that she’s pushing me past my limit, I just remember my workout is 60 minutes, not, 12 hours!
Furthermore, Hayley has taken on yet another challenge, as if Ironman wasn’t enough. Stepping out on her own as a female entrepreneur, Hayley has recently launched her own Personal Training business. For anyone who is looking for a partner who will enable you to reach fitness goals you never thought possible – Hayley is perfect for you. She is energetic and positive and genuinely loves her clients. In addition, she has launched a much needed pre and post-natal component within her Personal Training practice. Any moms or moms to be out there need to meet Hayley and hear all about her “Baby Bumps” programs.
Check out her website here and drop her a line – I know she’d love to hear from you!!
