On the mend
So I’ve been suffering with what seems to be the worst flu/cold I’ve ever had. In hindsight, part of me wonders if I should have filled the penicillin prescription on Friday, but, today I know that sticking with my stubborn Scottish roots was worth all the pain. The most exciting part of my four day flu/cold was the inevitable transfer from my bed to the couch around 6ish only to return to bed by 8 and after a while I did start to go a bit squirrely. In the middle of the night on Saturday I googled: home remedies for congestion! I was convinced that if I went back to bed in the state I was in I would die from lack of oxygen. Half an hour later I returned to bed, much to my other half’s chagrin. “You stink” was the reply. “Yeah, I just ate an entire clove of garlic and drank a glass of apple cider vinegar”, I said. -Thanks Google!
Being healthy is one of those things that we sometimes forget about of take for granted until an episode like this occurs. Not being able function, have your usual energy levels or frankly get anything done is upsetting at best. But through it all I just kept remembering the wise words of my good friend Willie Carter: ‘just be the best sick person you can be’. So, that’s what I did and four days (that felt like four weeks) later I can tell I’m on the mend.
I am grateful for the reminder that overworking, not sleeping enough, not eating properly – it will all catch up with you. Take care of yourself – it’s so worth it!

Self Sabotage
I was invited to write a blog here by my lovely friend Heather. I was extremely excited about this until I actually sat down to write and came up blank. Call it writers block, call it a form of stage fright, but for some reason I was coming up empty. For the last two weeks I have been fretting over what I would say here and nothing was coming to me. I had to ask myself why. Why when I was so excited about this could I come up with absolutely nothing to say? Yesterday the answer hit me: self sabotage. Not only is this something I can write about but it’s the reason for my little problem. Case in point, a person who always has something to say suddenly left speechless when it matters and comes to something that she really wants. There is no reason for my sudden lack of words other than this.
I am an exceptional self saboteur with years of practice. Every time I set a goal for myself or am excited about the end result of a project, I lose steam and I lose it fast. There’s a little voice inside my head that comes from nowhere and helps to mess things up. Well, truthfully, it doesn’t really come out of nowhere; this voice sits in wait in a corner of my mind, bides it’s time until the perfect moment for it to stand up, voice its opinion and start to ask questions that needn’t be asked. You know the voice I mean, we all have it. This voice is the embodiment of fear and doubt. This voice is the part of you that is afraid of what will happen if you succeed.
For reasons beyond me, I listen to this voice. I don’t want to, but I do. I listen to all of the “what ifs” and the “what happens when’s”. I nod in agreement that things would be better if they stayed the same instead of me achieving my full potential. I let that little spark of what could be remain just that, a spark, rather than see it turn into a flame and then a full blown fire. So I am setting a new goal for myself on this blog and that goal is to somehow get rid of this voice! I am going to find its little corner of my mind and evict it. I am going to deny it any right to my future and to my happiness from here on out. I know that doing this is going to require an unwavering faith in myself and the universe but that’s okay because I already have that. It too has a corner in my mind and while Faith may be a little less in your face than the other voice it’s there nonetheless and waiting for me to hear it. I think it’s high time I listen to what it has to say.

The Shift
Coming in the Spring of 2008 The Shift, a film not yet complete, is being made. Tackling some of the most important and controversial issues facing the world’s population today, the makers of the movie say:“A massive worldwide phenomenon is in progress, offering seeds of great hope for the future. Millions of individuals, organizations and corporations around the world are waking up and embracing a new outlook with an emphasis on their responsibility to contribute positively to our collective future. We are in the middle of the biggest social transformation in human history, The SHIFT. At this critical point, it is imperative we make the masses aware of this global movement quickly. This evolutionary phenomenon is broader and deeper than the most visible SHIFT, the environmental movement. It involves our very understanding of who we are as human beings, and our responsibility to the world and to life itself.”Check out the trailer:http://www.theshiftmovie.com/
Crowd Control
Last night as I arrived at BC Place to watch the Vancouver Whitecaps take on the Los Angeles Galaxy I was shocked to find a sea of people outside the venue. The largest gathering of soccer fans in Vancouver since 1983 with well over 48,000 in attendance was clearly more than BC Place staff were prepared to facilitate.
At 7:30 with the game in full swing inside BC Place I, amongst about 5,000 other anxious spectators, was still waiting in line to pick up my ticket from will call, let alone get into the building. What a nightmare. As people pushed and shoved jockeying for position I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. I listened as people complained about the inefficiecy of BC Place and nodded to one another concurring with each other’s frustration. Comments like “and to think we’re hosting an Olympic Games” were rampent and frequent.
All the while I couldn’t help but think about these peoples inabiltiy to take responsibility. Responsibility is the abilty to respond. What was stopping these people from being more prepared. It was no secret that a massive crowd was storming BC Place to catch a glimpse of David Beckham. I too was frustrated, but, how is this anyone else’s fault but my own. Here I was arriving to a soccer game 5 minutes before it was supposed to begin and expected to pick up my ticket from will call, get inside the venue, grab a beer and get to my seat amongts 48,000 other fans – hello. Clearly this was avoidable.
Lessons learned to be applied to future similar situations:
1) Obtain the hard copy of your ticket at least 4 hours prior to the event
2) Take a cab or public transit to avoid the traffic jam pre and post game
3) Arrive at the venue with at least 30 minutes to spare before the event is intended to begin
3) Come with a smile, patience and a good attiude – no one’s going anywhere fast, so relax and enjoy!
