It was Christmas time a couple of years ago and I had just finished one of the biggest contracts of my Entrepreneurial incarnation. I was waiting (desperately) for the cheque to come in so that I could buy presents for my family, catch up on the bills that I’d fallen behind on and celebrate the success of the work.
I heard the mail slot clink from my office (read: kitchen table) and I took a deep breath. I won’t freak out if it didn’t come, I promise myself. I walk over to the door, pick up the pile of mail, leaf though it, fall promptly to the floor and burst into tears. No cheque.
A few hours later, after I’d calmed down significantly and let go of the idea that I’d be better off getting a job at Starbucks, my other half came in the door. He was aware of the ‘situation’ and I heard him leafing through the same pile of mail. “What’s this…Government of BC…?”
The cheque was in the pile the entire time, I just hadn’t seen it.
I’d been so afraid that it wouldn’t be there, I completely missed the fact that it actually was.
Sometimes we try too hard, we squeeze too tight, we get too scared and thus get in our own way. That day taught me a valuable lesson: just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
I exhaled, laughed with tears in my eyes, paid some bills and went shopping!
