Last week I had a gal in my office who is in between jobs. She’s incredibly accomplished, talented, smart, hard working and overall has a tonne to offer the world. The challenge however, was her mind-set. The way she was thinking was holding her back from many things. She had, what I call the “this is the way it is” thinking. I asked her at one point if I could be blunt with her, and she responded “yes”. So I told her straight up – “you’re the only thing in the way of you creating the life you want. By thinking that “this is the way it is”, you will continue to see validation of that belief in your circumstances and in your life. If you want out of your “this is the way it is life”, then you’re going to have to start thinking about life in a different way.”
Thankfully, she took it very well. She leaned back in her chair, took a deep breath, looked up at me and said “you’re right”.
She left my office, lighter and brighter, but most of all she left aware. I had managed to ‘jolt’ her out of her habitual way of thinking, long enough for her to realize that there was a ‘way’ she was thinking, and if she was going to change the results in her life, she had an opportunity here to take responsibility by changing her ‘way’.
After she left, I thought more about our conversation, and thought back to the days when I had “this is the way it is” thinking. During those days, I was convinced that my life was shit, that it never was going to change, that I’d be overworked and underpaid forever, that I was so hard done by, etc. etc. If I could go back and tell that 19 year old what we were going to accomplish over the next 10 years, I don’t think she would have believed a word of it. And yet, here I am.
Last week, for example, I lived out a lifelong dream and goal when I appeared on television for the first time. I shudder to think how my life would be different if I hadn’t changed my ‘way’ of thinking.
If you’re wondering how to achieve your goals, and live out your wildest dreams, I recommend you do one thing first. Ask yourself if you think in a ‘way’ in which, the achievement of your goals and dreams would validate? Do you believe before you see? If not, it might be time to change your ‘way’.
Have a great day!!
P.S. Here’s living proof that dreams come true. The clip from my TV debut; Urban Rush where we talk, business, entrepreneurship, gut-check and more:)
