The season of giving is upon us! Now get out there, sharpen your elbows, fight for that parking space, push and shove as you make your way through the crowded malls and stores. Be rude and grumpy with the sales staff when you find out you can’t get Nintendo Wii in Vancouver until after Christmas! Yes, we’ve all been there. The stress, the pressure, the money, the parties…it’s never ending. Is this what the Holidays are all about? I don’t think so!!
The Holidays are supposed to be about giving, not about spending. Giving of your time, your energy, your love, your joy, not about spending your money. But, it’s during this time that people lose perspective of the world. There is no concept of abundance or sharing. It’s everyone for themselves – total competitive mindset. No one seems to be thinking “you take that spot, there will be another one right away..”. Instead, it gives me flashbacks of Kathy Bates in Fried Green Tomatoes – parking lot rage!
Instead of falling victim to this tornado of stress decide today that you will take a different approach. For the next six days make the promise to yourself that you will leave every person you engage with better than you found them. Tell the sales people who ring through your purchases how grateful you’ve been for their help. Give the parking space you’ve been waiting for up to the distressed woman honking and screaming in her car. Buy an extra coffee when you’re in Starbucks and give it to the person who’s walking in the door so they don’t have to wait in the 30 minute line-up you just did.
Trust me when I tell you that you don’t get to give, you give to get. Your Holiday will be so incredibly enjoyable if you adopt this challenge!
